Roro ferry route promises improved connectivity between Batam, Indonesia, and Johor, Malaysia.
Indonesia and Malaysia are finalizing plans to launch a new Roro ferry route connecting Batam and Johor, expected to begin operations by 2025. The initiative aims to boost tourism, trade, and regional connectivity, with potential to serve over 500,000 passengers annually.
The Batam-Johor Roro ferry route is part of Indonesia and Malaysia’s broader efforts to enhance bilateral relations, foster tourism, and strengthen trade links. This project complements initiatives discussed during the 39th Malaysia-Indonesia Socio-Economic Working Group (Sosek Malindo) meeting, held in Banda Aceh from December 4–7, 2024.
Purwiyanto, Deputy Head of Batam’s Free Trade Zone Authority, emphasized the ferry route’s potential to increase international tourist arrivals and extend visitor stays. With 500,000 annual passengers projected, the initiative will spur economic activity in Batam, supporting hotels, SMEs, and local tourism operators.
The Roro route will ease the movement of passengers and goods, offering a seamless link between two economic hubs. Enhanced connectivity is expected to increase cargo traffic and reduce logistical costs, strengthening trade between Batam and Johor.
Batam recorded 120,185 international arrivals in August 2024, a 26.19% year-on-year increase, with Singaporean visitors making up over 53% of arrivals. Improved ferry connectivity is anticipated to further elevate these numbers, boosting hotel occupancy rates and local businesses.
Johor and Batam authorities are working closely to align the Roro ferry with the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) framework. Doli Boniara, Head of the Kepri Border Management Agency, underscored the ferry’s role in advancing trade, fisheries, and tourism cooperation.

Despite promising prospects, the project’s success hinges on collaborative efforts with local tourism stakeholders, businesses, and SMEs. Authorities are addressing concerns over the limited number of foreign arrivals compared to outbound Indonesian travelers to ensure balanced benefits.
The Batam-Johor Roro route offers a convenient travel option to explore the vibrant cultural and tourism offerings of both regions. This development strengthens Batam’s position as a key economic and tourism hub in Southeast Asia, fostering greater regional collaboration and connectivity.
