International visitors flock to Batam for delicious food and bargains but note poor road conditions.

Batam, a key tourist destination in Indonesia, trails only Bali and Jakarta in attracting international visitors. The majority of its foreign tourists hail from neighboring Malaysia and Singapore, drawn by Batam’s affordability, unique culinary offerings, and shopping opportunities. However, infrastructure issues such as pothole-ridden roads have sparked criticism, even as visitor numbers continue to rise.

Malaysian Tourists Praise Batam’s Food

Visitors from Malaysia, including first-timer Fazilla, highlighted Batam’s culinary delights, noting the affordability and distinct taste compared to similar dishes in Malaysia. “The chicken noodles here are far better, with richer flavors,” said Fazilla, who also visited the Barelang Bridge and Nagoya Mall for shopping.

Shopping and Affordability Add to Batam’s Appeal

Fazilla and her friends found goods in Batam significantly cheaper than in Malaysia. After a visit to Nagoya Mall, Fazilla said, “I bought chocolates and bags here at much lower prices than back home.”

Calls for Better Infrastructure and Unique Landmarks

Another Malaysian tourist, Momin, pointed out the city’s lack of distinct landmarks and noted that road conditions worsened closer to the city center. “The rural areas have decent roads, but the city has many potholes. A unique Batam landmark would make the city even more appealing,” he suggested.

Local Crafts and Souvenirs Needed

Momin expressed a desire for more authentic local crafts. “Wooden carvings featuring ‘Batam’ as a souvenir would attract tourists,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for personalized keepsakes to enhance Batam’s tourism experience.

Growing Tourism Numbers and Future Prospects

Batam’s tourism continues to thrive, with over 1 million international visitors in 2024, according to Batam’s Tourism Office head, Ardiwinata. The city is diversifying attractions, adding sports tourism, beach clubs, and religious tourism destinations to its offerings.

Batam remains a top travel destination for food and shopping. However, addressing infrastructure issues and offering more unique attractions and souvenirs could further solidify its appeal. Improved roads and a distinctive landmark could transform Batam from a popular getaway to an unforgettable travel destination.

Batam attracts international tourists, particularly Malaysians, for its affordable and delicious food. Visitors, however, highlighted infrastructure issues and called for more unique landmarks and local crafts. Despite these concerns, Batam’s tourism numbers continue to grow, with over 1 million visitors in 2024.
