85 Influencers Arrested for Allegedly Promoting Online Gambling in Indonesia

Indonesian authorities have detained 85 influencers accused of promoting online gambling platforms through social media. The arrests are part of an intensified crackdown led by the Online Gambling Eradication Task Force, established in early November 2024.


Since the creation of the Online Gambling Eradication Task Force on November 4, 2024, Indonesia has launched an aggressive campaign to combat illegal online gambling. The arrests of influencers mark a critical step in addressing the role of social media in promoting these platforms.


85 Influencers Detained for Gambling Promotions
Komjen Pol. Wahyu Widada, Indonesia’s Chief of Criminal Investigation, announced that 85 individuals had been apprehended for endorsing online gambling. These influencers allegedly advertised illegal gambling sites during the COVID-19 pandemic and afterward.

Police Collaboration with Experts
To determine the activity status of promoted gambling sites, the police enlisted IT and criminal law experts. Sites found active resulted in immediate arrests, while inactive sites were excluded from further action.


Seized Assets Worth IDR 77.6 Billion (S$6.4 Million)
Authorities confiscated significant assets, including IDR 77.6 billion (S$6.4 million) in cash, 858 mobile phones, 111 laptops, 470 bank books, 829 ATM cards, six vehicles, and two firearms.


Rising Online Gambling Among University Students
Higher Education Minister Satryo Soemantri revealed that approximately 960,000 students nationwide had engaged in online gambling, raising alarms about its pervasiveness among youth.

Government’s Cybersecurity Efforts Intensified
The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has used advanced AI technologies to block over 3.5 million gambling-related sites in 2024 alone. Officials have also introduced digital literacy programs across 27 provinces to raise awareness.
