Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has raised concerns over escalating global tensions, emphasizing the risks posed by ongoing conflicts and geopolitical rivalries. Speaking at the People’s Action Party (PAP) Conference on November 24, Wong called for vigilance, unity, and strengthened international cooperation amid a shifting global order.

At the PAP Conference 2024 in Singapore, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong shared his perspectives on the precarious global situation, drawing on discussions from the recent APEC forum in Peru and G20 Summit in Brazil. Addressing the growing uncertainty, he warned of the potential long-term effects of fading global norms and rising superpower rivalries.

Prime Minister Wong outlined the world’s volatile state, citing ongoing wars in Europe and the Middle East and worsening US-China relations. He emphasized that the Pax Americana—an era of American-led global stability—is waning, leaving a void in international leadership.

Wong acknowledged the shift in US policy under President Trump’s “America First” mandate, which reflects public sentiment against the high cost of upholding global stability. Meanwhile, emerging powers like China and India remain inward-focused, unable to assume global leadership roles.

Highlighting conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, Wong explained how weakened international norms embolden state and non-state actors to exploit the leadership vacuum, often with minimal consequences.

He called for major powers to overcome mistrust and work collectively on shared global challenges such as climate change and nuclear proliferation. However, Wong admitted that deep suspicion between the US and China limits progress, with each viewing the other as a strategic threat.

Preparing for a more challenging decade, Wong urged Singapore to strengthen its resilience, maintain neutrality, and build alliances globally. He also confirmed that the upcoming PAP biennial conference would precede the 2025 general election.

The evolving geopolitical landscape underscores the importance of a stable and secure region. Singapore’s proactive approach to diplomacy and readiness highlights its commitment to navigating global uncertainties while maintaining its role as a regional hub.
