Indonesian Consulate in Johor Bahru Holds Seminar to Commemorate Hero Tuanku Tambusai on Heroes’ Day

To mark Heroes’ Day on November 10, the Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru organized a seminar and memorial ceremony in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. These events honored the life and legacy of National Hero Tuanku Tambusai, a key figure in the Padri War who fought Dutch colonial forces alongside Tuanku Imam Bonjol and Tuanku Rao.


The two-day event took place in Seremban, Malaysia, including a seminar and a ceremony, attended by Indonesian and Malaysian officials and community members. This tribute aimed to foster historical awareness and deepen the connection between Indonesia and Malaysia.


The commemoration began on November 9 with the 2024 International Seminar on Remembering Tuanku Tambusai (SMITT) held at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM). Attendees included prominent figures such as YB Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli from Negeri Sembilan’s government, Indonesian Consul General Sigit Suryantoro Widiyanto, and USIM’s Professor Dato’ Muhammad Tauffik. The seminar highlighted Tuanku Tambusai’s values, including resilience, leadership, loyalty, and friendship, which Consul General Sigit noted as inspirations for youth.

During his address, Consul General Sigit highlighted the significance of strengthening Indonesian-Malaysian relations, pointing out that their shared history can motivate both countries to maintain principles of unity and patriotism. He also emphasized the seminar’s contribution to educating younger generations about historical figures and enhancing regional solidarity.


A significant resolution from the seminar included a proposal for a dedicated research chair focusing on Tuanku Tambusai’s historical contributions. Such research aims to delve deeper into his impact, preserving his legacy for future generations and promoting historical education.


On November 10, a memorial ceremony took place at Tuanku Tambusai’s gravesite in Rasah. The event, led by Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia, Dato’ Indera Hermono, gathered around 200 participants, including Indonesian and Malaysian officials, Tuanku Tambusai’s descendants, and Indonesian residents in Malaysia.
