In a significant crackdown on illegal labor trafficking, Batam police have prevented the illegal migration of four individuals to Cambodia and apprehended two suspects involved in the recruitment process. The operation unfolded at Hang Nadim Airport on November 4, 2024.
The incident was part of a broader effort to combat the trafficking of workers from Indonesia, which has become a critical issue as individuals seek better economic opportunities abroad, often risking exploitation.
Initial Detection and Arrests
The operation began when Batam airport police grew suspicious of five passengers arriving from Kualanamu Airport, Medan. After questioning, it was revealed that they were en route to Cambodia via Singapore, led by a recruiter identified only as JS from Deli Serdang, North Sumatra.

Recruiter and Facilitator’s Role
JS, along with another accomplice from Batam named DM, was involved in organizing travel and employment for the victims. JS recruited the individuals, while DM arranged their travel logistics, including tickets and transit.
Financial Gains and Operations
Upon interrogation, JS and DM admitted to earning between Rp 500,000 and Rp 1 million ($42.50 to $85) per person. The workers were allegedly promised jobs in restaurants in Cambodia, a claim still under police investigation.
Legal Proceedings
Both suspects were transferred to the Gender and Child Protection Unit of the Barelang Police for further legal action. They face severe penalties under Indonesia’s Migrant Worker Protection Law, including up to ten years in prison and fines of up to Rp 15 billion ($1.275 million).
