Microsoft has disclosed a staggering number of daily cyber attacks worldwide, pinpointing a significant vulnerability in password security.

Microsoft’s latest findings highlight an alarming rate of cyber attacks focused on user identities, with 600 million incidents reported each day. This revelation underscores the growing sophistication and frequency of cyber threats globally.

Microsoft Entra has recorded over 600 million identity attacks daily, with a massive 99% targeting user passwords, reflecting the critical vulnerability of password security in today’s digital landscape.

 

Among the prevalent threats are AiTM Phishing Attacks, ransomware, and QR code phishing, each demonstrating an evolution in the methods used by cybercriminals to exploit personal and organizational vulnerabilities.

The landscape for ransomware has grown increasingly severe, with human-operated ransomware attacks rising by 2.75% year-over-year. These attacks are particularly nefarious, targeting unmanaged devices within organizations to initiate encryption and ransom demands.

There has been a rapid increase in QR code phishing, a method that has grown in sophistication and frequency throughout 2024. Microsoft’s Defender for Office 365 has successfully mitigated these attacks, reducing their occurrence by 94% through advanced image detection technologies.
