Telkom Indonesia (TLKM) is expanding its Neutra DC data center in Batam to support artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, enhancing Indonesia’s standing in the tech sector. With a projected capacity increase to accommodate advanced technologies, the project underscores Batam’s emerging role in Southeast Asia’s digital landscape.

As Telkom Indonesia forges ahead with its Neutra DC data center project in Batam, the focus has shifted towards AI integration. Initially set for basic operations, the design has been updated to accommodate AI-ready infrastructure. Honesti Basyir, Telkom’s Group Business Development Director, confirmed that Phase 1, covering the first floor, is expected to be completed in Q1 2025.

The project, located in Kabil Industrial Estate, is at an early construction stage but is progressing swiftly. Although construction completion stands under 10%, the remaining phases are anticipated to accelerate, with capacity expansion plans already underway. “Construction is fast; filling it up is the easy part,” Honesti explained, confident that completion will stay on schedule.

Adapting to the needs of an AI-based environment required redesigning elements of the data center. These updates will see Neutra DC’s initial capacity grow from 12-16 MW to an estimated 21-30 MW, optimizing it for high-demand AI processes. “The total capacity is set to rise, reflecting our updated design,” Honesti noted.

The center’s new specifications cater to anticipated regional growth in AI and data processing, with Telkom aiming to position Batam as a driving force in Indonesia’s technological advancements. With AI as a core component, Neutra DC Batam is set to lead the development of digital services, furthering the area’s appeal for data-centric investments.

Part of Telkom’s broader strategy, the Neutra DC development highlights Indonesia’s emerging role in the global data network. The planned enhancements will boost the data center’s efficiency, benefiting businesses that rely on high-performance computing.
