In celebration of its 24th anniversary and the 79th National Electricity Day, PT PLN Batam hosted a vibrant Festival Kompang, spotlighting local Malay traditions and encouraging cultural preservation.
PT PLN Batam commemorated its 24th anniversary alongside the 79th National Electricity Day with a Festival Kompang event at BCS Mall in Nagoya, Batam, on Saturday evening, October 26, 2024. The festival, opened by Acting Mayor Andi Agung, brought together local communities to celebrate and preserve Malay cultural heritage through the traditional art of kompang music.
PT PLN Batam’s CEO, Muhammad Irwansyah Putra, emphasized that the Kompang Festival showcases the unity between PLN Batam and the Batam government in cultural preservation efforts. “On behalf of PT PLN Batam’s management, we extend our gratitude to Batam’s City Government for their support,” Irwansyah said on Sunday, October 27, 2024. The event is seen as a meaningful step in preserving kompang music, an integral part of Batam’s Malay identity.

With increasing global cultural exchange, Irwansyah highlighted the festival’s role in nurturing local pride and awareness among the youth. “The global flow of external cultures cannot be easily contained, making this festival a valuable platform for introducing the rich heritage of Malay culture to younger generations,” he stated. The event is designed to inspire love and appreciation for Indonesia’s diverse cultural roots.
The festival saw spirited participation from kompang groups, both young and seasoned, each showcasing unique rhythms and creative kompang arrangements. Teams competed for top awards, celebrating creativity within the traditional art form, with categories for first, second, and third place, as well as honorable mentions.
Acting Mayor Andi Agung lauded PLN Batam’s initiative in organizing the cultural event, highlighting its importance for preserving Malay traditions. “This cultural festival is an effort to maintain the rich heritage of Malay music, especially with the presence of kompang as a vital component,” Agung remarked, expressing his appreciation for the efforts to integrate cultural values into community events.
