The Galang Batang Special Economic Zone (KEK) located in Bintan Island, Kepulauan Riau, Indonesia, is set to attract an investment of Rp36.25 trillion by 2027. This zone benefits significantly from its strategic location near the crucial Malacca Strait and South China Sea, positioning it as a pivotal point for maritime and industrial activities.

Endorsed by the Indonesian government under President Jokowi’s administration, KEK Galang Batang is a premier example of strategic economic development. Officially inaugurated on December 8, 2018, by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Darmin Nasution, this zone is designed to optimize Indonesia’s industrial capabilities, particularly in mining and mineral processing industries such as bauxite.

KEK Galang Batang is not only a mining hub but also a center for the refinery and smelting processes of bauxite. The zone is projected to create substantial economic growth through its comprehensive industrial activities, which also include the construction of a port facility capable of handling up to 20 million tonnes annually.

This special economic zone is expected to provide employment for approximately 23,200 people in various sectors including refining, smelting, and port services. The development of this zone is anticipated to have a significant multiplier effect, enhancing job opportunities and economic activity within the region.

The inaugural export of 70,000 tons of Smelter Grade Alumina (SGA) to Malaysia marked the beginning of international trade activities for KEK Galang Batang. Under the oversight of PT BAI, the zone has exported a total of 550,000 tonnes of SGA valued at USD 212 million or approximately SGD 275 million as of January 2022.

Looking forward, PT BAI plans to construct an aluminum smelter to produce aluminum ingots, aiming to produce 2 million tonnes of SGA which would result in 1 million tonnes of aluminum ingots by 2027. The gradual increase in production capacity underscores the zone’s potential in enhancing Indonesia’s industrial output on the global stage.
