Batam’s Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) is calling on women to take a stand against vote-buying practices ahead of the 2024 regional elections. The appeal aims to empower women voters to reject and report illicit offers, including cash and goods, that may compromise election integrity.

Ully Yushariyen Damanik, Coordinator of Human Resources at Bawaslu Batam, highlighted the critical role women play in maintaining fair elections, given that female voters in Batam nearly equal their male counterparts, with 450,701 registered female voters out of a total of 899,666.

Women have often been targeted with vote-buying tactics, such as the distribution of basic goods and cash incentives, during election periods. These actions can influence voter behavior, undermining the principles of a fair and transparent election process.

Ully emphasized the necessity for women to overcome reluctance and fear in addressing such practices. “Now is the time for women to speak up and reject these practices,” she stated, urging women to stand against vote-buying in the lead-up to the Pilkada 2024.

Bawaslu has undertaken outreach efforts to encourage female participation in both voting and overseeing the election process. Ully, as one of the female commissioners at Bawaslu Batam, aims to empower women to actively safeguard election integrity.

With female voters comprising over half of the electorate, their participation is crucial for a balanced and fair election. Ully highlighted that women’s voices and vigilance are essential for detecting and reporting any electoral misconduct.

Ully’s message to women was clear: “Women should not feel insecure. They must have the courage to monitor and report any violations during the 2024 elections.” Her appeal is part of a broader initiative to enhance election fairness through community involvement.

Bawaslu Batam’s efforts to engage women in rejecting vote-buying practices underscore the importance of their role in upholding election standards. With their substantial voter base, women’s active participation and vigilance could significantly influence the integrity of the 2024 Pilkada.

Batam’s Bawaslu is urging women to actively resist and report vote-buying as Indonesia prepares for the 2024 regional elections. With women making up a substantial portion of the electorate, their involvement is seen as crucial in maintaining election integrity and fairness.
