In response to extreme weather conditions, the Batam City Government is strengthening its disaster mitigation strategies, aiming to reduce risks and improve community preparedness.
Batam is facing an increase in extreme weather events, prompting local authorities to implement stronger disaster mitigation measures. These efforts are led by the Batam City Fire Department (Damkar) and involve both structural and non-structural strategies to safeguard the community and infrastructure.
Head of Damkar Batam, Azman, outlines the city’s disaster mitigation approach, which includes creating disaster-prone area maps, conducting public education sessions, and enhancing community awareness about the risks associated with extreme weather.

Azman explains the dual aspects of mitigation efforts in Batam: structural measures involve physical infrastructure improvements, while non-structural measures focus on community training and emergency preparedness, especially as the city enters the rainy season.
In anticipation of weather-related emergencies, Batam’s Damkar has intensified coordination with the military, police, and the Department of Public Housing, Urban Settlement, and Landscaping (Perakimtan). Emergency response teams are on 24-hour alert to handle incidents such as fallen trees, landslides, and fires.
Following recent severe weather events, Damkar Batam has launched public outreach initiatives to educate residents on how to minimize the impacts of such conditions. These efforts are crucial in building a resilient community capable of responding effectively to emergencies.

The Batam City Government’s enhanced disaster mitigation measures reflect a proactive approach to managing the risks associated with extreme weather. By strengthening infrastructure and community awareness, Batam aims to minimize the impact of potential disasters and ensure the safety of its residents.
As extreme weather events become more frequent, Batam City has intensified its disaster mitigation efforts. Through educational initiatives, improved infrastructure, and heightened emergency preparedness, the city seeks to safeguard its residents and reduce the overall risk of disasters.
