Amid growing regional competition, Indonesia’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, has highlighted the strategic expansion of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Batam and Bintan, focusing on semiconductor and artificial intelligence industries to rival the new Johor-Singapore SEZ.

During a Knowledge Sharing and Networking Event in Bali, Minister Airlangga Hartarto outlined the government’s strategy to enhance Batam and Bintan’s economic zones as pivotal players in the semiconductor and AI industries, directly competing with the emerging Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone.

Minister Airlangga spoke at the event held in Kura-Kura Bali on September 29, 2024, emphasizing the potential of SEZs like Nongsa in Batam and Galang Batang in Bintan. These zones are set to expand their technological infrastructure, including AI data centers, to foster growth in high-tech industries.

The proximity of Batam and Bintan to the Johor-Singapore SEZ poses both a challenge and an opportunity. Airlangga detailed plans to develop these Indonesian SEZs into hubs for semiconductor production, leveraging their strategic location and enhanced facilities.

Highlighting the competitive nature of regional economic zones, Airlangga noted that the Johor-Singapore collaboration aims to attract significant investments that could influence regional dynamics. Indonesia’s response involves matching and surpassing these offerings to retain and attract global investors.

The focus is not only on attracting investors but also on creating a conducive environment for the semiconductor industry. This includes developing necessary infrastructure like water and energy supplies crucial for manufacturing processes.

Recognizing the need for skilled labor in high-tech industries, Airlangga advocated for enhanced human resource development. Collaborations like those between UID Bali Campus and Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center aim to prepare a workforce capable of supporting the semiconductor and AI sectors.

The Indonesian government’s proactive expansion of SEZs in Batam and Bintan is set to strategically position these zones at the forefront of Southeast Asia’s economic map. By focusing on cutting-edge technologies and robust infrastructure development, Indonesia aims to attract substantial foreign investment and compete effectively with neighboring economic zones.

Indonesia’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, has emphasized the strategic importance of expanding SEZs in Batam and Bintan to rival the Johor-Singapore SEZ. This move aims to boost Indonesia’s role in high-tech industries such as semiconductors and AI, ensuring the nation remains competitive in the regional investment landscape.
