In light of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring Mpox a global health emergency on August 14, 2024, Batam’s Health Department is stepping up its vigilance and preventive strategies to protect the community and travelers alike.
As the WHO reports a significant rise in Mpox cases worldwide, totaling 99,000 with 208 fatalities, Batam’s health officials are on high alert. The local response is spearheaded by Didi Kusmarjadi, the head of Batam’s Health Department, who confirmed that, as of now, Batam has managed to stave off new cases, maintaining the city’s record of minimal Mpox infections. The latest statistics mark an alarming uptick in global cases but prompt a robust local response to prevent a similar surge.
“Up to now, we’ve had only one case previously, and there have been no new detections,” Didi stated in an interview with batamnews.co.id, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to keep the city safe.
