Batam’s Criminal Investigation Unit arrested five individuals involved in a major cable theft at a cold storage facility, using their ill-gotten gains to finance drug parties and procure prostitutes.

On August 15, 2024, five suspects were apprehended at Hotel 99 in Sei Panas, Batam, following a theft at PT. Kiat Ananda Cold Storage. This case highlights a growing concern over the use of stolen goods to fund criminal activities in the region.

The theft occurred early in the morning at Citra Buana 3, Kelurahan Belian. The perpetrators broke into the facility and stole several cable rolls valued at approximately IDR 33.895 million (about SGD 2,881).

The arrested individuals, aged between 19 and 25, confessed to using the stolen cables to purchase drugs and hire prostitutes via the Michat app, as well as to fund alcohol-fueled parties.

The Batam City Police, led by Iptu Ardiansyah, used CCTV footage to identify and locate the suspects. The arrest was made within days of the crime, showcasing effective law enforcement techniques.

The suspects face charges under Article 363 of the Indonesian Criminal Code, which deals with aggravated theft, carrying a potential sentence of up to seven years in prison.
