Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto has unveiled Indonesia’s ambitious plan to export electricity to Singapore. The strategy includes developing a robust multichannel transmission system to connect the Java and Sumatra grids to Singapore, emphasizing sustainability and reliability.

During the 2nd Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting held at St Regis Hotel, Jakarta, on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, Minister Airlangga Hartarto highlighted Indonesia’s strategic advancements in electrical infrastructure that will enable the country to export up to 2 gigawatts of clean energy to Singapore.

Indonesia is setting up an interconnected power transmission network that will not only link Java and Sumatra but also extend to the Riau Islands including Batam, Bintan, and Karimun. This grid integration is part of the broader ASEAN Power Grid initiative aimed at bolstering regional energy security and connectivity.

The electrical link will primarily transmit energy generated from solar panels located in the Batam, Bintan, and Karimun areas, marking a significant step towards leveraging Indonesia’s renewable resources.

Indonesia’s initiative to export electricity to Singapore represents a pivotal development in regional energy dynamics, potentially setting a precedent for international energy trading in Southeast Asia. This venture not only promises to fortify bilateral ties between Indonesia and Singapore but also demonstrates a commitment to sustainable energy solutions, which could serve as a model for other nations. For Singaporeans and international observers, this underscores both countries’ roles as forward-thinking leaders in green energy within ASEAN.

Minister Airlangga Hartarto announced plans for Indonesia to export 2 gigawatts of clean electricity to Singapore by strengthening the ASEAN Power Grid. This initiative aims to reduce environmental impact and enhance regional energy security, marking a significant step in ASEAN’s journey towards sustainable development.
