Indonesia Ranks Second as Southeast Asia’s Digital Investment Destination

Indonesia has emerged as the second-largest destination for digital investments in Southeast Asia, according to Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto, with substantial inflows amounting to SGD 29.7 billion (USD 22 billion) in 2023.

Minister Airlangga Hartarto highlighted Indonesia’s achievement during the FEKDI and Indonesia Creative Works (KKI) event in Jakarta, noting that while Singapore remains the hub for digital investments in Southeast Asia, Indonesia has made significant strides by attracting considerable investment, surpassing both Vietnam and Malaysia.

In 2023, Indonesia’s digital sector investments reached SGD 29.7 billion, significantly higher than Vietnam’s SGD 1.49 billion and Malaysia’s SGD 1.41 billion, showcasing the country’s growing appeal to digital investors.

Efforts to enhance the digital payment systems and the overall digital infrastructure have contributed to the rise in Indonesia’s competitiveness, improving 11 ranks to 45th globally in 2023.

The ASEAN digital economy grew to SGD 265.3 billion (USD 194 billion) in 2022, with Indonesia contributing 40%. This growth is supported by widespread internet usage and increased digital services adoption across the region.

The venture capital investment in ASEAN reached SGD 17.55 billion (USD 13 billion) in the first half of 2023, indicating a robust environment for startups and digital innovation.

Indonesia aims to leverage its digital economy potential, projected to grow fourfold by 2030, reaching between SGD 286 billion and SGD 489 billion, enhancing its position as a leader in digital innovation in the region.

Indonesia’s strategic advancements in digital infrastructure and regulatory environment have effectively positioned it as a leading destination for digital investments in Southeast Asia. This progression not only boosts Indonesia’s economy but also offers substantial opportunities for regional and global investors, including those from Singapore.

At the FEKDI and KKI event in Jakarta, Minister Airlangga Hartarto highlighted Indonesia’s significant position in Southeast Asia’s digital investment landscape. With substantial investment inflows in 2023 and strategic government initiatives, Indonesia is set to enhance its digital economy, offering lucrative opportunities for international stakeholders in the burgeoning ASEAN digital market.
