Couple in Batam Caught with 35kg of Meth from Malaysia

The Batam, Rempang, and Galang Resort Police (Polresta Barelang) in the Riau Islands Province successfully intercepted 35.5 kg of methamphetamine originating from Malaysia, intended for distribution in West Jakarta.

On the night of June 17, 2024, Batam police captured a married couple, EH and NA, who were acting as couriers for a major drug trafficking ring from Malaysia, seizing a significant amount of meth destined for the streets of Jakarta.

Police secured 35,502.56 grams of meth, with portions set aside for legal proceedings and lab testing. The operation highlighted a sophisticated smuggling route through the maritime channels from Malaysia to Indonesia.

EH and NA, the husband and wife team, were caught under the Nongsa Point Marina Bridge in Batam. EH was identified as the courier receiving directives from a currently wanted person (DPO), while NA handled the financial transactions.

The operation extended to West Jakarta, where another suspect, AS, was arrested while attempting to receive the narcotics. This arrest on June 20 demonstrates the wide network of this drug smuggling operation.

The suspects face severe penalties, ranging from a minimum of five years to the death penalty. This operation saved an estimated 357,740 individuals from potential drug abuse, assuming ten people could be affected per gram of meth.

The seized drugs were destroyed using an incinerator vehicle provided by the National Narcotics Agency of the Riau Islands (BNNP Kepri), ensuring that these drugs did not re-enter the community.
