Batam’s New Health Tourism Zone Eyes SGD 580 Million Investment

Batam’s administration is accelerating the development of the International Health Tourism Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which targets an impressive investment of SGD 580 million by 2032. This initiative is part of Indonesia’s broader strategy to boost economic growth and job creation through specialized zones.

On May 29, 2024, the Indonesian Minister of Economic Affairs approved the establishment of three new Special Economic Zones, including the Health Tourism SEZ in Batam. This decision underlines the strategic importance of Batam as a hub for health-related travel and services in Southeast Asia.

The Health Tourism SEZ in Batam is set to attract investments totaling SGD 580 million over the next eight years, aiming to transform the region into a leading destination for medical and wellness tourism.

This new development is projected to create job opportunities for over 105,000 people, spanning 80 years, significantly impacting local employment and economic stability.

Spanning 47.17 hectares, the SEZ will be divided between Sekupang (23.10 hectares for Integrated Health Tourism) and Nongsa (24.08 hectares for general tourism), featuring facilities like international hospitals, a nursing academy, and accommodation for tourists and medical visitors.

The zone will include the Mayapada Apollo Batam International Hospital, a MedTech Park, and various residential and commercial developments aimed at supporting the health services and enhancing the visitor experience.

The project aligns with government regulations as outlined in Government Regulation Number 40 of 2021 on the Management of Special Economic Zones, ensuring a structured and well-supported development process.

This development is expected to enhance regional tourism, provide alternative healthcare options, and strengthen economic ties between Indonesia and Singapore.

The Batam International Health Tourism SEZ is poised to become a significant economic and healthcare hub in Southeast Asia, with a targeted investment of SGD 580 million aimed at creating over 100,000 jobs and boosting regional tourism and wellness services.
