Amid Indonesia’s ambitious plans to master Scorpene Evolved submarine technology through a partnership with France’s Naval Group, India has shown a keen interest in participating in the project, aiming to enhance its own naval capabilities and deepen defense ties with Indonesia.
The partnership initiated by France’s Naval Group with Indonesia’s PT PAL aims not only to develop Scorpene Evolved submarines but also to incorporate extensive technology transfer and local production, positioning Indonesia as a leader in ASEAN submarine manufacturing.
India’s interest in the project stems from its previous collaboration with France’s Naval Group, which allowed local production of six Scorpene/Kalvari class submarines. Indian shipbuilders believe they can contribute valuable insights and expertise to the Indonesia-France collaboration.
The partnership would allow India to gain firsthand experience with the latest Scorpene variant, aligning with New Delhi’s plans to acquire additional submarines and sustain its domestic shipbuilding knowledge.
The involvement of India could enhance the tri-nation collaboration, providing mutual benefits in maritime security and defense technology advancements. It also positions the project as a cornerstone of regional defense cooperation.
The proposed collaboration follows a series of diplomatic and defense dialogues, including the 7th Joint Defense Cooperation Committee meeting held in New Delhi, where both countries discussed increasing their defense and maritime security cooperation.
