The Batam City Government is leveraging sports tourism, particularly through golf, to increase international tourist visits, showcasing Batam as a premier sports tourism destination.
In an effort to boost tourism, the Batam City Government is focusing on sports tourism initiatives, including the prestigious ‘Batam Golf Beyond Tournament’ which aims to attract global athletes and increase tourist visits.
The ‘Batam Golf Beyond Tournament’ is set to take place in October 2024 at renowned golf clubs including Palm Springs Country Club and Batam Island Country Club, targeting 300 international athletes from various countries such as Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Korea, and several European nations.
Ardiwinata, Head of Batam’s Culture and Tourism Office, believes this event will significantly contribute to the local economy by reviving the sports tourism sector and utilizing Batam’s top-tier golf facilities as a major attraction.
According to the Batam Central Statistics Agency, February 2024 saw a notable increase in international visits, with 112,687 tourist arrivals marking a 43.08% rise from January. The majority were from Singapore, accounting for nearly 51% of the total.
Alongside Singaporeans, visitors from Malaysia, India, China, and the Philippines were significant, with Indian tourists showing a remarkable increase of 121.46% in visits compared to the previous month.
