The Indonesian Embassy in Singapore has successfully employed cultural diplomacy by showcasing the traditional Maumere dance to approximately 400 middle school students at Methodist Girl School in Singapore. This initiative, part of the “The Glimpse of Indonesia” event, aims to strengthen the cultural and historical ties between the two nations.
The cultural performance is a strategic effort to deepen mutual understanding and respect between Indonesia and Singapore, leveraging their historical and cultural commonalities to build a robust relational foundation.
Rizki Kusumastuti, the Secretary of Social and Cultural Information, highlighted the shared historical roots between Indonesia and Singapore, including significant Indonesian influences in Singaporean place names and historical figures.

IGAK Satrya Wibawa, Education and Culture Attaché, emphasized that such cultural engagements are crucial for geopolitical mapping within ASEAN and broader Asia, reflecting both nations’ commitment to enhancing mutual understanding through education and culture.
Since 2022, the Singaporean government has prioritized programs related to Indonesia, facilitating over 2,000 Singaporean students to engage in cultural and research programs in Indonesia, showing a significant investment in bilateral relations.
Miss Valeri Wilson, the head of Methodist Girl School, mentioned the school’s new initiatives to encourage students to explore ASEAN cultures, particularly Indonesia, to overcome the regional knowledge gap among young Singaporeans.
