In a significant strategic move, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Indonesia’s Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment, has announced plans to establish a direct shipping route from Medan to Ningbo, China. This initiative aims to enhance Indonesia’s maritime independence and reduce reliance on Singapore as a transit hub for exports.
During the fourth Indonesia-China High-Level Dialogue and Cooperation Mechanism meeting in Labuan Bajo, Minister Luhut expressed his vision for a direct shipping route that would facilitate exports directly from Indonesia to China, bypassing the need for transit through Singaporean ports. This move is part of broader efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s position in global trade networks.
The new route from Kuala Tanjung Port in Medan to Ningbo aims to streamline the export process, offering more efficient and cost-effective options for Indonesian businesses.

By establishing a direct route to Ningbo, Indonesia looks to boost its export volumes while showcasing its capacity to handle international trade independently.
The initiative also reflects Indonesia’s ongoing efforts to deepen ties with China, enhancing economic and diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The plan includes upgrading the infrastructure at Kuala Tanjung Port to handle the increased trade traffic and improve logistics capabilities.

Indonesia’s move to establish a direct shipping route with China signifies a shift towards greater economic independence in Southeast Asia. This development could reshape regional trade dynamics, potentially decreasing Singapore’s role as a primary transshipment hub and positioning Indonesia as a more self-reliant player in the global maritime economy.
Indonesia is actively pursuing a new direct shipping route from Medan to Ningbo, aiming to reduce reliance on Singaporean ports and establish a more independent pathway for exports to China. Spearheaded by Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, this initiative is part of a larger strategy to strengthen Indonesia’s maritime capabilities and enhance its global trade relationships. The move is expected to improve export efficiency, reduce costs, and foster economic growth by opening direct trade channels between Indonesia and one of China’s major ports.
