Drawing on a robust export performance and strategic market positioning, Indonesia’s tilapia has emerged as a contender in the international seafood market. Director General Budi Sulistiyo highlights a 7% growth trend from 2017-2023 in tilapia exports, signaling the commodity’s strong global demand and Indonesia’s potential to expand its market reach.
The global tilapia market, valued at $1.65 billion in 2022, predominantly features frozen fillet products. Indonesia’s strategic emphasis on quality and certification has enabled it to penetrate major markets in the USA, EU, and Canada, with opportunities to expand further, particularly in the Middle East.

Indonesian tilapia stands out for its eco-label certification, fetching the highest prices in the U.S. compared to competitors from China, Taiwan, and Honduras. This premium positioning underscores Indonesia’s commitment to sustainable and responsible fisheries management.
The absence of export rejections to the U.S. market over 2021-2022, unlike competitors facing bans due to health and safety concerns, highlights the superior quality and safety standards of Indonesian tilapia.
Budi Sulistiyo emphasizes the zero-waste potential of tilapia, with all parts of the fish being utilized for various products, from culinary ingredients to pharmaceutical applications, showcasing the sustainability and innovation within Indonesia’s tilapia industry.
