The Special Criminal Investigation Directorate (Ditreskrimsus) of the Riau Islands Police has apprehended a suspect involved in the illicit trading of subsidized diesel fuel in Batam. Utilizing modified vehicles and counterfeit fuel cards, the scheme netted an estimated profit of SGD 2,580 (Rp. 30 million) per month for the perpetrator.

The operation highlights the ongoing issue of fuel smuggling in Indonesia, with Batam being a strategic location due to its proximity to international waters and Singapore. This case sheds light on sophisticated methods employed by individuals to exploit subsidized fuel for profit.

A Toyota pickup truck with several 30-liter jerry cans filled with diesel was seized by the police, parked in front of the Cyber Sub-Directorate building of Ditreskrimsus Polda Kepri, marking a significant capture in the fight against fuel smuggling.

The suspect, arrested in the Villa Paradise residential area, modified a pickup truck’s tank to carry additional fuel, purchasing up to 500 liters of subsidized diesel daily across various gas stations with counterfeit fuel cards and license plates.

The illegal operation caused a state loss of approximately SGD 21,930 (Rp. 255 million) over five months, highlighting the financial impact of such activities on national resources.

Evidence seized includes a pickup truck, four fuel cards, seven jerry cans, a smartphone, and seven vehicle license plates, underlining the preparedness of the criminal operation.

Charged under the Oil and Gas Law, the suspect faces a potential six-year prison sentence and a fine of up to SGD 5.16 million (Rp. 60 billion), reflecting the severe penalties for fuel smuggling in Indonesia.
