In a significant operation, authorities from the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Riau Islands Police have exposed an illegal sand mining activity in Batam, Riau Islands. This crackdown led to the seizure of equipment and the arrest of two suspects identified only by their initials HK and SD, revealing a longstanding illicit operation.
The discovery stems from two police reports filed on January 9 and January 29, 2024, indicating operations on January 8 and January 29, 2024. This illegal mining has been a thorn in the side of law enforcement, with the suspects believed to be repeat offenders who had previously evaded capture.
The suspects employed a consistent modus operandi, utilizing dredging machines, pipes, hoses, and dump trucks for sand extraction without the necessary permits, reflecting a pattern seen in prior cases handled by the authorities.

The financial damage to the state from HK’s operations is estimated at approximately SGD 12,900 (RP 150,000,000), with activities spanning over two months. In contrast, SD’s longer tenure of over two years has caused a significantly higher loss estimated at around SGD 154,800 (RP 1,800,000,000).
Both individuals face charges under the Indonesian Mining Law, with potential penalties including up to five years in prison and fines up to SGD 8.6 million (RP 100 billion), highlighting the severe consequences of engaging in illegal mining activities.
This case underscores the ongoing challenges in curbing illegal mining operations that not only deplete natural resources but also pose significant environmental and economic harms.
