In a strategic move to bolster business and investment, PT Bandara Internasional Batam (BIB) has announced the inauguration of direct flights from Batam, Indonesia to Kunming, China. This development, commencing on January 20, 2024, is set to significantly enhance economic growth and connectivity between the two regions.
Ariastuty Sirait, Head of Public Relations, Promotion, and Protocol at BP Batam, views this new route as a crucial step in promoting Batam’s international standing. The direct connection between Batam and China is anticipated to invigorate the local tourism and trade industries, contributing to Batam’s economic expansion.
The new air route is expected to fortify the cooperative relationship between Indonesia and China, potentially leading to increased Chinese investment in Batam.
Ariastuty believes that this international flight route will also benefit the development of Batam as a prime investment destination in Indonesia.
According to the Ministry of Investment’s records from the first to the third quarter of 2023, China is one of the largest Asian investors in Batam, with an investment value of USD 46.42 million across 137 projects.
The plan includes a phased increase in flight frequency, starting with once a week from January to March 2024, twice a week from April to May, and thrice a week thereafter until January 2025.

Citilink Indonesia will operate the flights, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s expansion into international routes.
