The Indonesia Development Forum (IDF) 2023, a significant event in the Meeting, Incentive, Convention, and Exhibition (MICE) sector, is set to take place in Batam, showcasing the city’s pivotal role in driving international tourism and regional economic revival in the Riau Islands.
The choice of Batam as the venue for IDF 2023 highlights the city’s importance as a contributor to over 70% of the foreign tourist visits in the Riau Islands. This strategic decision is aimed at leveraging Batam’s robust infrastructure, including over 230 star-rated hotels and resorts, to stimulate local economic development and position it as a premier MICE destination.
Guntur Sakti, Head of the Riau Islands Tourism Department, emphasized the positive impact of MICE activities in Batam, including a potential increase in the region’s Original Revenue (PAD).

The theme for IDF 2023, “Advancing Blue Economy Innovation and Collaboration,” aligns with national development plans and emphasizes the potential of the blue economy for sustainable development.
Ansar Ahmad, Governor of the Riau Islands, highlighted that the Blue Economy roadmap aligns with the long-term National Development Plan (RPJPN) 2025-2045, focusing on sustainable and inclusive exploitation of marine resources.
Batam’s selection as the host city for IDF 2023 is a testament to its advanced infrastructure and status as a top MICE destination in Indonesia, following Bali and Jakarta in terms of international tourism contribution.
