The development of Penagi Port in East Bunguran Sub-district, Natuna District, has received a financial injection of Rp1.4 billion from the Natuna District Government’s local budget.

The Rp1.4 billion investment, sourced from Natuna’s local budget (APBD), aims to revitalize the historically significant Penagi Port to bolster the local economy and potentially re-establish its former prominence in regional trade.

Allazi, the Head of the Natuna Transportation Department, highlighted that the port development aims to support and enhance the economy of the region, with the current construction marking the second phase. The first phase was undertaken in 2019.

Upon completion, the port will extend to a length of 108 meters. The current second phase sees an addition of 41 meters to the existing structure. A continuation of the construction is slated for 2024.

Natuna’s Regent, Wan Siswandi, inspected the construction progress on October 30, 2023, emphasizing its timely completion. Upon its partial completion, the port will cater mainly to fishing boats and small vessels, with larger vessels expected to dock once the entire development concludes.

A local resident, Judin, praised the port’s development, emphasizing its historic significance. The port, in past times, played a pivotal role as a primary trading gateway from Bunguran Besar Island, reflecting the deep-rooted economic history of the Natuna community.

In a recent inspection, both Wan Siswandi and the Head of the Natuna Transportation Department, Alazi, showcased optimism regarding the port’s progress, which has been underway for 90 workdays. Despite potential challenges like tidal movements, the team has made anticipatory measures ensuring smooth development.

Singaporeans and international visitors can anticipate easier and more historical trade connections with the rejuvenated Penagi Port. The port’s development signals Natuna’s dedication to enhancing regional connectivity, potentially boosting trade and tourism experiences within the ASEAN region.

With a funding boost of Rp1.4 billion from the local budget, the historical Penagi Port in Natuna undergoes significant development. This effort not only aims to revitalize local trade and the economy but also reinstates the port’s ancient prominence in the region. This move promises enhanced regional connections, benefiting both local trade and international visitors.
