Menteri Pariwisata dan Ekonomi Kreatif (Menparekraf) Sandiaga Uno recently highlighted the island’s significant past, specifically its religious landmarks and historical buildings. This enchanting island has been proposed for UNESCO World Heritage status, underscoring its national and international importance.

The acting head of the Riau Islands Tourism Department, Luki Zaiman Prawira, confirmed that visitors to Pulau Penyengat are welcomed without any entrance fees, enhancing its accessibility and appeal.

Tourist data from May 2023 illustrates the island’s allure, with 52,430 international visitors. Tourists predominantly come from Singapore and Malaysia, drawn by the shared historical ties and cultural significance.

Sandiaga Uno emphasized the island’s religious and historical attractions, including the Masjid Raya Sultan Riau, built with egg whites, and numerous historic fortifications. These sites offer a unique glimpse into the region’s rich cultural tapestry.

Plans for future development, backed by Minister Uno and Kepulauan Riau Governor Ansar Ahmad, focus on sustainable tourism, carbon-neutral initiatives, and enhanced facilities, aiming to create a multifunctional, zero-carbon destination.

The local government, in collaboration with business sectors and banking institutions, plans to enrich the tourist experience further, integrating traditional culture with modern amenities and sustainable practices.
