Batu Ampar’s General Terminal has seen a positive shift with the introduction of the STS Crane, marking a significant stride in boosting the port’s efficiency and competitive edge in Batam.
The move towards a more tech-savvy port at Batu Ampar signals the terminal’s ambitions to establish itself as a prominent logistics hub in the region, supported by modern technology and significant investment.
The introduction of the Ship to Shore (STS) Crane on September 1, 2023, at the Batu Ampar Terminal has led to a notable increase in unloading efficiency, with regulatory adjustments made in the port’s tariff services, as per Regulation No. 4 of 2023 by BP Batam.
Dendi Gustinandar, Director of the Port Business Authority, highlighted that since the STS Crane’s operation, a single unit has managed to handle roughly 15% of the total loading and unloading volume at Batu Ampar’s General Terminal. This advanced machinery promises even greater capacities in the future.

Within the crane’s first month of operation, approximately 4,500 containers were managed. This translates to an impressive average capacity of 20 containers per hour, a considerable leap from the 7 to 8 containers achieved with conventional equipment.
A range of domestic and international shipping firms, including SPIL, Tanto, Temas, Snepac, Laut Mas, Mega Maritim, Putra Lautan Mandiri, have tapped into the STS Crane’s services, further cementing Batu Ampar’s reputation as a leading port in the region.
BP Batam is also championing an awareness campaign about the early-phase operation of the Batu Ampar Container Terminal by PT Persero Batam. This initiative is grounded in an agreement involving the Batam Management Body and PT Persero Batam, with operations at Batu Ampar’s north pier by PT Persero Batam set to commence in November 2023, backed by an investment of IDR 1.1 trillion.
For Singaporeans and global visitors, Batu Ampar’s transformation signifies a bolstered trade link and logistic prowess in the region. With enhanced efficiency, it offers a potential gateway to more seamless trade activities, potentially influencing regional market dynamics and boosting economic prospects.
Batu Ampar’s General Terminal in Batam integrates the state-of-the-art STS Crane, promising significant improvements in port operations. With increased capacity and greater efficiency, the port is set to elevate its regional stance, offering promising trade implications for Singaporeans and global stakeholders.
