State-owned enterprises minister Erick Thohir is emerging as a top vice presidential candidate, leading recent polls conducted by Poltracking Indonesia.
Poltracking Indonesia, a renowned strategic research and consultancy institution, has played a pivotal role in advancing democracy within the nation. Their recent survey, conducted from 25th September to 1st October 2023, showcased Thohir’s popularity among potential vice-presidential candidates.
Among 1,000 respondents, primarily from East Java, Thohir led with a significant 19.8% of the votes.
Other potential candidates like Mahfud Md, Muhaimin Iskandar, and Khofifah Indar Parawansa trailed with 15.2%, 14.7%, and 13.7% respectively.
According to Arya Budi, Director of Research at Poltracking Indonesia, Thohir’s popularity surged to 21.4% when Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s name was excluded from the poll.

Erick Thohir, also the chairman of the Islamic Economic Society, enjoys widespread support from various sectors in East Java, including the Nahdlatul Ulama, football enthusiasts, and business communities.
Thohir’s electability, deemed robust for exceeding the margin of error, suggests that a significant portion of East Java residents hope to see him as the vice-presidential candidate in the upcoming elections.
