The head of Batam’s Management Agency, Muhammad Rudi, has raised suspicions of outside provocation behind the recent upheavals on Rempang Island. This comes in the wake of a formerly peaceful protest turning violent.

Rempang Island, located in the Batam archipelago, has recently been under the spotlight due to the Rempang Eco City project. This national strategic project, aiming to transform the island into an integrated zone of industry, commerce, and tourism, was officially recognized at the end of August 2023. However, its development has meant potential eviction for many residents, sparking tensions and protests.

Rudi mentioned the intriguing nature of a recent protest, pointing out that some demonstrators weren’t local residents. “Those who demonstrated recently had to obtain permission from the police. The applicant’s address was not from there,” noted Rudi.

While the demonstration began peacefully, the situation dramatically escalated, resulting in property damage to the BP Batam office and injuries to several officers. Out of 22 injured personnel, 17 belonged to the national police, while others were local security personnel. Two are currently hospitalized, with one undergoing surgery due to sustained injuries.

The BP Batam is racing against the clock, aiming to relocate 4 villages spanning 2,000 hectares to pave the way for the Xinyi Group, a Chinese investor, with an investment value of around IDR 172.5 trillion. Their goal is to complete the relocation by 28th September. “That’s the task we’ve been given,” Rudi confirmed.

Highlighting the concerns around the upcoming silica sand processing operations, Rudi stressed the importance of relocating residents to avoid health risks. He depicted a disturbing scenario: “Imagine it entering the nose, the mouth. If they remain there, they’re at risk.

In light of the challenges, Rudi remains optimistic about the project’s long-term benefits for the community. He alluded to the opportunities that the Rempang Eco City development could bring in enhancing the welfare of the local populace.

As Batam is in close proximity to Singapore and is a popular destination for both Singaporeans and international tourists, the developments in Rempang might influence future travel and investment decisions. A stabilized and developed Rempang could boost tourism and business prospects, but ongoing unrest might deter potential visitors.

Suspicions of external provocation surround recent protests on Batam’s Rempang Island concerning the Rempang Eco City project. While tensions escalate over potential resident evictions, the project’s long-term benefits and implications for nearby Singapore and international visitors remain to be seen.
