The Nongsa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Batam has successfully provided jobs for 2,618 individuals between January and June 2023.
The report from PT Taman Resor Internet, the zone’s development and management entity, highlights the contributions of 17 businesses that invested in the area, enhancing the region’s economic performance.
The economic zone has experienced continuous growth since its establishment through Regulation No. 68 of 2021, reaching a noteworthy Rp2.49 trillion in investments by June 2023.
The accumulated investment consists of Rp 751.8 billion from the zone’s development and management body, and an impressive Rp 1.74 trillion from the business entities operating in the zone.
Muhammad Rudi, the head of Batam’s Authority, expresses optimism about the economic zone’s positive influence on the regional economy. He anticipates that the SEZ will create more job opportunities for the Batam city population.
Muhammad Rudi emphasizes the commitment of the Batam Authority to support the zone’s development by ensuring supportive infrastructure and streamlining licensing processes. He notes that major international players such as Apple, IBM, and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University have been successfully attracted by PT Taman Resor Internet.
In alignment with the directive of the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of Indonesia, Airlangga Hartarto, Rudi envisions Batam as a “Digital Bridge” between Indonesia and Singapore, implying that an increase in Batam’s investments can spur economic growth for the entire region.
The expansion and success of the Nongsa Special Economic Zone position Batam as a significant hub bridging the digital economies of Indonesia and Singapore. For Singaporeans, this growth can mean increased economic collaborations, business opportunities, and enhanced bilateral ties. For international visitors, it signifies Batam’s rising stature as a key destination for business, innovation, and digital technology.
From January to June 2023, the Nongsa Special Economic Zone in Batam successfully generated over 2,600 jobs, boosting the region’s economy. With significant investments and international interest, including from tech giants like Apple and IBM, the zone’s success positions Batam as an emerging digital bridge between Indonesia and Singapore, offering potential business opportunities and economic collaborations.
