An Indonesian man, Nordin, was sentenced to one year in prison and five strokes of caning for illegal entry into Singapore via speedboat, marking his repeated offense under the Immigration Act.

Nordin, an Indonesian national, faced severe penalties after being convicted of entering Singapore illegally, a repeat offense since his previous transgressions between 2015 and 2019. This case sheds light on the strict enforcement of Singapore’s immigration laws.

Nordin, 36, has been previously convicted of similar offenses under the Immigration Act and was found guilty on two counts on December 4th for his latest illegal entry attempt.

In pursuit of employment opportunities, Nordin used a speedboat from Batam and landed on Singapore’s coast near Tanah Merah Coast Road in the early hours of November 20, 2023, before fleeing to a nearby forest.

A Coast Guard Police officer observed the boat entering Singaporean waters on the night of November 19th, prompting a search around the Tanah Merah Coast area.

Clothing, emergency bedding, and other items were found in a canal near Sungei Kadut Industrial Area during a police raid on December 5th, leading to Nordin’s arrest at 07:30 on November 20th.

Nordin, who lacked identification documents or valid entry permits, was arrested for illegal entry. Previously deported, he faced a minimum of one year in prison for re-entering Singapore without immigration authority permission.
