Police cite possible financial stress behind Chinese New Year killings
A quiet neighborhood in Kuantan was shaken on Chinese New Year morning after a 32-year-old man allegedly killed four family members before taking his own life inside their home.
Bodies Discovered On Festive Morning
The incident occurred at a single-storey house in Taman Cherating Damai, Kuantan. The bodies were discovered around 7am on Feb 17, the first day of Chinese New Year, after the suspect’s 25-year-old brother was awakened by a loud noise.
When he stepped out of his room, he reportedly saw his mother covered in blood in the kitchen. She allegedly told him to seek help from their uncle who lived nearby.
Four Family Members Killed
The victims were the suspect’s 55-year-old mother, his 33-year-old wife, and their two daughters aged four and two.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said preliminary investigations indicate that the man allegedly slashed his family members before killing himself.
Weapon Recovered At Scene
Police recovered a 29-centimeter knife believed to have been used in the attack. The bodies of the suspect, his wife, and the two children were found in one bedroom, while the elderly woman’s remains were located in the kitchen.
Victims reportedly suffered wounds to their hands, ears, and necks.
Possible Financial Motive
Authorities said the suspect had no prior record of mental illness. However, early investigations suggest financial difficulties may have been a contributing factor.
Bernama reported that the man worked as a security guard.
Witness Account Of Argument
Kuantan police chief ACP Ashari Abu Samah said the suspect’s brother heard an argument before the tragedy unfolded.
After seeking help from their uncle, both returned to the house and found all victims and the suspect unconscious and covered in blood.
Ongoing Investigations
Autopsies on the suspect and his wife were believed to have been completed on Tuesday, while examinations of the other victims were still ongoing.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident to establish a clearer timeline of events.
The Kuantan family tragedy has cast a shadow over festive celebrations and raised concerns about the hidden pressures families may face. As investigations continue, authorities are working to determine the full circumstances behind the case. For Indonesians and Singaporeans observing regional developments, the incident underscores the importance of mental health awareness and early intervention in addressing domestic stress and financial hardship.
