Early morning crash on East-West Highway claims 15 student lives, injures dozens more
A devastating bus accident in the early hours of June 9 along Malaysia’s East-West Highway has claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students and left 31 others injured. The tragic incident occurred near the Banjaran Titiwangsa rest stop and involved a student bus and another vehicle.
Early Morning Tragedy
The Perak Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 1.04am on Monday, June 9, following a collision involving a bus carrying 42 students and another vehicle. The incident occurred on the East-West Highway (Jalan Raya Timur-Barat), near the Banjaran Titiwangsa RNR, with both vehicles traveling from Jeli toward Gerik.
The bus overturned while the accompanying car veered into a ditch. Firefighters arriving at the scene found some passengers had been thrown from the bus, others trapped inside, and many severely injured. Hydraulic cutters were used to gain access and rescue victims from the rear of the wrecked vehicle.
15 Lives Lost, Dozens Injured

Perak Fire and Rescue director Sayani Saidon confirmed that 48 people were involved—42 students, a bus driver, an attendant, and four individuals from the second vehicle. Initially, 13 deaths were confirmed on site, but later reports increased the death toll to 15.
Thirty-one others sustained injuries, with three passengers from the second vehicle suffering minor wounds and one individual sustaining a broken arm. All injured were stabilized at the scene before being transported by Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS), Health Ministry, and Civil Defence ambulances to nearby hospitals.
National Response and Grief

Malaysia’s Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, calling it a “great loss” to the UPSI community. Posting via Facebook, he extended condolences to the victims’ families and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured.
“The loss of young lives is a tragedy that reverberates throughout the nation,” he stated, acknowledging the emotional impact on families and the broader education community.
Investigation and Recovery Efforts
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, while emergency personnel continue to provide medical assistance and support to the victims and their families. The collision has reignited calls for improved road safety, especially on long-distance routes involving student travel.
The bus was reportedly en route from Jertih, Terengganu to Tanjung Malim, Perak, a route commonly used by university buses. The Malaysian government is expected to assess transportation protocols in light of this incident.
The Gerik bus crash stands as a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the need for greater road safety across Southeast Asia. With students among the most vulnerable road users, this tragedy resonates not only in Malaysia but across neighboring nations like Indonesia and Singapore, where many travel frequently by road for education and leisure. Stronger transportation safety standards and preventive measures are now more urgent than ever.
