Authorities Seize Over 10 kg of Meth in Major Drug Bust

A couple attempting to smuggle 2.24 kg of methamphetamine through Hang Nadim International Airport in Batam has led to the uncovering of a larger drug trafficking network. Authorities seized a total of 10.95 kg of meth following subsequent raids in Batam, Indonesia. The operation was a joint effort between Batam Customs and the Barelang Police Department, resulting in the arrest of four suspects, with three others still on the run.

Suspicious Luggage Leads to Major Drug Seizure

On January 23, 2025, customs officers at Hang Nadim International Airport, Batam, grew suspicious of a suitcase belonging to a couple identified as RD (28) and AM (24). Upon inspection, officers discovered eight packages of methamphetamine weighing 2.24 kg hidden inside their luggage.

“The couple planned to transport the drugs from Batam, transit through Jakarta and Makassar, with the final destination being Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi,” said Zaky Firmansyah, Head of Batam Customs.

Following the couple’s arrest, the Narcotics Unit of the Barelang Police and Batam Customs launched an investigation, leading to a raid on a hotel in the Jodoh area of Batam. Authorities arrested nine more individuals and seized an additional 8.7 kg of meth packaged and ready for distribution.

The suspects arrested include individuals with familial or close personal ties, identified as AWI, QA, OKI, RE, DR, NW, RS, GR, and TES.

Investigations revealed that the smuggling operation was part of a cross-border drug trafficking syndicate, with connections to Malaysia. The meth was allegedly smuggled into Indonesia via Karimun Regency before being repackaged for domestic distribution.

– AWI: Alleged mastermind, responsible for recruiting couriers.
– OKI: Main liaison coordinating drug shipments.
– RD and AM: The couple assigned to transport meth via air routes.

Authorities have identified three fugitives still at large:

– RO: The suspected kingpin believed to be the mastermind behind the operation.
– SASA and NAWI: RO’s associates responsible for drug distribution across Indonesia.

“Couriers were promised up to IDR 50 million (SGD 4,150) per trip,” said AKP Deni Langie, Head of the Barelang Police Narcotics Unit.

Some of the arrested individuals claim they were unaware of the criminal activities, having been misled with promises of legitimate employment.

The four main suspects have been charged under Indonesia’s strict Narcotics Law, which carries severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities determined to dismantle the entire network.
