The altercation began when workers from PT MEG removed banners protesting the Rempang Eco City project in Sembulang Hulu. Villagers apprehended one worker, sparking a confrontation with his colleagues.

Attempts by local police and military to mediate between residents and the company fell apart. Villagers demanded a formal agreement from PT MEG to cease such actions, but negotiations remained inconclusive.


In the early hours of December 18, a group of armed individuals attacked the villagers’ outpost, destroying property and injuring eight residents, including children. Motorbikes, banners, and other possessions were damaged during the assault.


The violence extended to neighboring areas, with the attackers targeting a second village outpost in Sei Buluh. Key banners displaying national figures were destroyed, adding to the community’s distress.

Local police secured the area, but the villagers expressed concerns about safety and alleged ongoing intimidation by PT MEG employees. Activists and local leaders demanded stricter action against those responsible for the violence.
