The Indonesian government has successfully revitalized investment in Batam through the establishment of two strategic zones: the Free Trade Zone (FTZ) and the Special Economic Zone (KEK), bolstering the region’s economic growth.
In a significant push to enhance investment in Batam, the government has developed facilities within designated Free Trade Zones and Special Economic Zones. These zones are designed to catalyze investment by leveraging Batam’s strategic location along international shipping routes and its proximity to Singapore and Malaysia.
Batam features an FTZ that includes several islands, fostering sectors like manufacturing, electronics, shipbuilding, tourism, and logistics. These areas have seen rapid growth due to favorable economic policies.

Batam is home to three operational KEKs: Batam Aero Technic, Nongsa, and Tanjung Sauh. These zones specialize in various economic functions, from logistics to digital economy, offering substantial facilities to businesses.
The government has streamlined investment processes within these zones, offering fiscal and procedural incentives to attract domestic and foreign investments.
The successful implementation of these zones has significantly contributed to the regional economy, accounting for about 65% of the economic growth in the Kepulauan Riau province.
