Indonesia’s Rempang Eco-City project, underpinned by Presidential Decree No. 78 of 2023, marks a significant stride towards sustainable urban development. This initiative aims to foster economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social well-being, positioning Rempang as a new economic powerhouse in competition with Singapore and Malaysia.
The decree is a critical move by the Batam Development Agency (BP Batam) to maximize investment in Rempang Eco-City, with a focus on housing, industrial zones, and office spaces. This development is seen as a key to unlocking the region’s potential, contributing positively to the environment, society, and economy.
The estimated investment in Rempang Eco-City reaches IDR 381 trillion (approximately SGD 32.76 billion), promising to create around 306,000 direct jobs, showcasing the project’s massive scale and ambition.

The comprehensive plan includes dividing the area into seven distinct zones, including industrial, agro-tourism, commercial and residential, and heritage zones, each designed to enhance the economic and social fabric of the region.
A significant component of the development strategy is to boost local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and ensure equitable development across the community, reinforcing the government’s commitment to inclusive growth.
Muhammad Rudi, head of BP Batam, emphasizes the project’s focus on community interests, with early actions like initiating the construction of the Maritime City Fishermen’s Village, intended as a model for modern and advanced community living in Indonesia.
