City prepares 170 communal containers across Sagulung, Batu Aji, and Sekupang.

Batam is moving ahead with a new waste-hauling model as the city tries to reduce recurring garbage buildup. The first phase combines private-sector transportation with new communal containers and community involvement in deciding where waste facilities should be placed.

349 Waste Collection Points Included
Batam’s Environmental Agency, or DLH, plans to begin the privatized waste-hauling program at 349 temporary waste collection points across Sagulung, Batu Aji, and Sekupang. DLH head Dohar Mangalando Hasibuan said the initiative is intended to help address Batam’s waste problem, with the city currently generating around 1,000 tons of waste per day.

170 Containers Arriving in November
Batam’s Environmental Agency has ordered 170 communal waste containers that are expected to arrive in November 2026. The containers will be distributed across the targeted districts to provide designated temporary collection facilities for household waste before it is transported to the final disposal site. Officials hope the facilities will help reduce uncontrolled garbage buildup and improve waste collection in residential neighborhoods.

Residents Help Determine Container Locations
Authorities have begun community outreach across the three districts, with container locations to be determined through consultations with residents. In Sungai Langkai, Sagulung, environmental agency and district officials met with representatives of 35 neighborhood associations on November 2 to discuss suitable locations. Officials emphasized the importance of accessibility, community support, environmental conditions, and minimizing disruption to nearby residential areas.

Private Sector Focuses on Waste Transportation
The first phase of Batam’s waste-management privatization plan will focus on transporting garbage from temporary collection points to the final disposal facility in Sagulung, Batu Aji, and Sekupang. The city intends to involve private operators in this part of the collection process as it works to address recurring delays and garbage accumulation. Details of the operating arrangements and implementation schedule have not yet been fully established in the available reporting.

Batam Reshapes Its Waste Management System
The three-district initiative forms part of Batam’s broader efforts to improve waste management and reduce recurring garbage accumulation. The city has previously pursued improvements to temporary waste collection facilities, including enclosed containers and better-organized disposal areas. Under the latest plan, officials are encouraging residents to place household waste directly into designated communal containers to support more orderly collection and transportation.

The introduction of 170 communal containers and private waste hauling across 349 collection points represents a significant operational change for Batam’s waste services. For Indonesians, particularly residents of Sagulung, Batu Aji, and Sekupang, its effectiveness will depend on reliable collection, appropriate container placement, and community discipline. For Singaporeans following development in nearby Batam, the program provides a regional example of how a rapidly growing city is restructuring basic urban environmental services.
