Relatives struggle to reconcile court findings with the parents they thought they knew.

The sentencing of a young Singapore couple over the fatal abuse of their eight-month-old son has left relatives confronting a disturbing gap between what happened inside the home and what they believed they saw from outside.

Parents Receive Lengthy Prison Sentences
Neo Jia Ming, 27, was sentenced to 16 years in prison on October 21, 2026, while his wife, Chloe Gan Ci Xuan, 23, received 15 years and three months for offenses relating to the fatal abuse of their eight-month-old son, Trevor, in September 2024. Both pleaded guilty on October 12 to three charges relating to their son’s abuse. Gan admitted to causing Trevor’s death, while Neo admitted to allowing his death. Neo also pleaded guilty to a separate charge of assaulting Gan.

Court Records Detail Months of Abuse
Court documents showed that Trevor was repeatedly shaken, smothered and hit during much of his short life. He died following abuse by Gan on the night of September 1, 2024, and was pronounced dead at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital at approximately 12:20 a.m. on September 2. Hospital staff subsequently filed a police report, leading to the couple’s arrest.

Family Says Abuse Was Hidden From Them
Neo’s mother and elder sister told reporters after sentencing that they had not noticed signs of abuse during their occasional visits with the family. They remembered Trevor as a cheerful baby who enjoyed being carried and hugged, and said the couple had appeared devoted to each other. The relatives said they were struggling to reconcile those memories with the abuse revealed in court.

Relatives Had Helped Support Young Family
Neo worked as a food delivery rider and pet groomer, while Gan had also worked as a pet groomer before leaving her job after giving birth. Neo’s sister said she sometimes helped the couple financially and purchased necessities such as milk powder and diapers. The sentencing judge also noted that the couple had family support and were not entirely alone in caring for Trevor.

Domestic Abuse Was Also Revealed
Court proceedings also established that Neo physically abused Gan between February and August 2024. His mother and elder sister said they had not recognized signs of violence in the couple’s relationship. However, a friend told reporters that some friends had known Neo could be physically rough with Gan and that he had previously spoken to Neo about his behavior.

For Singaporeans, the case is a severe reminder that serious abuse can remain concealed even from relatives who maintain contact with a family. For Indonesians following developments in neighboring Singapore, the sentencing also highlights how child abuse and domestic violence cases can involve warning signs that are difficult for extended families to recognize until harm has already occurred.
