PLN deploys technical teams as electricity disruption spreads across major Riau Islands areas.
A major electricity disruption struck parts of the Riau Islands on October 12, interrupting daily activities across Batam, Bintan and Tanjungpinang as PLN worked to restore the regional power system.
Outage Begins Around 6:30 A.M.
The widespread power disruption began at around 6:30 a.m. WIB on October 12, 2026, affecting several areas of Batam as well as Bintan and Tanjungpinang. In Batam, reported affected locations included Batu Aji, Sagulung, Tiban, Bengkong, Batam Center and Tanjung Uma, among other areas. PLN Batam confirmed that electricity had been disrupted at multiple locations and said technical checks were underway.
Public Services and Communications Affected
Warta Bela Negara reported that the blackout affected more than household electricity, with residents also reporting disruptions to mobile and internet signals and clean-water distribution in some parts of Batam. Hang Nadim International Airport was also reported to have experienced electricity disruption in passenger waiting and tenant areas, although the report said there was no verified information at the time on flight cancellations or delays.
PLN Begins Gradual Power Restoration
PLN Batam Manager of Communication and Public Relations Yoga Perdana Sulastama said technical and operational teams had been deployed to identify the disruption and restore electricity. The company said normalization would be carried out gradually while prioritizing safety and system reliability, with particular attention given to hospitals and other public-service facilities.
Some Networks Begin Returning Online
As of an 8:49 a.m. update, several distribution networks in Batam had been restored and electricity had begun returning to some areas, according to BP Batam. However, restoration was not simultaneous across all affected locations, and no confirmed time for full recovery had been announced in the initial reports.
Cause Remains Under Investigation
PLN said its immediate priority was restoring electricity while technical teams worked to identify the cause of the outage. In its initial October 12 statements, the company had not confirmed whether the disruption originated from a power plant, transmission network, interconnection system or another component. PLN advised customers to follow official updates as restoration continued.
The October 12 blackout demonstrated how a major electricity disruption can quickly affect households, communications, water services and public facilities across Batam and neighboring islands. For Indonesians in the Riau Islands, attention now turns to full restoration and PLN’s investigation into the cause. For Singaporeans with business, travel or other connections to nearby Batam, the outage is also relevant because disruptions to the island’s infrastructure can affect activities beyond the electricity sector.
