Factory output rises 15.4% as AI demand lifts electronics and precision engineering.

Singapore’s manufacturing sector accelerated sharply in August, with technology-linked industries leading growth as global demand for AI infrastructure continued supporting production.

Factory Output Rises 15.4%
Singapore’s manufacturing output increased 15.4% year on year in August 2026, accelerating from a revised 6.9% rise in July, according to Economic Development Board data released on September 28. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output grew by 17%, showing stronger expansion across the rest of the industrial sector.

Precision Engineering Leads Growth
The precision engineering cluster recorded the strongest increase at 33.9% year on year, supported by higher production of semiconductor equipment. The machinery and systems segment expanded on the back of higher output of semiconductor equipment.

Electronics Gains From AI Demand
Electronics output climbed 28.5%, supported by sustained AI-related demand. Semiconductor output rose 26.1%, while the infocommunications and consumer electronics segment also recorded strong growth.

Transport Engineering Also Expands
Singapore’s transport engineering cluster grew 9.5% in August, supported by higher output of aircraft parts and increased maintenance, repair and overhaul jobs from commercial airlines. General manufacturing and biomedical manufacturing also recorded smaller increases during the month.

Chemicals Remain the Main Weak Spot
Chemicals was the only major manufacturing cluster to contract, falling 12.7% year on year. The decline was driven by lower output across several chemical segments, including petroleum and petrochemicals.

For Singaporeans, the August figures show manufacturing growth being strongly supported by electronics, semiconductor equipment, and other AI-linked production, even as chemicals remain under pressure. For Indonesians following Singapore’s economy, the data provides a snapshot of how technology demand is shaping manufacturing activity in the neighboring regional hub.
