Grab plans 50 autonomous vehicles as Singapore prepares wider on-demand driverless services.
Grab is accelerating its autonomous vehicle rollout in Singapore, moving from a limited neighborhood trial toward a larger fleet and potentially broader commercial service.
Fleet to Grow From 10 to 50 Vehicles
Grab announced on September 14, 2026, that it will expand its autonomous vehicle fleet from 10 to 50 vehicles over the next six months. The company said the larger fleet will support broader service coverage within Punggol while creating capacity for possible expansion to other parts of Singapore. Any service outside Punggol will remain subject to regulatory approval.
More Than 12,000 Riders Have Used Service
Grab said its current autonomous fleet has traveled more than 110,000 kilometers on Singapore roads and served over 12,000 unique riders. More than 1,000 people are also on a waiting list for new autonomous vehicle experiences, double the figure of more than 500 reported in July. Public AV rides in Punggol began in April after the Land Transport Authority approved community rides involving Grab and autonomous driving company WeRide.
On-Demand Service Planned for Punggol
Grab is preparing an on-demand point-to-point service that will allow riders to travel directly between selected pick-up and drop-off locations instead of relying only on fixed shuttle routes. Trial riders are expected to gain access in the coming months, with gradual public availability targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, when commercial fares are expected to apply. The existing AV shuttle will remain free while the new service is tested.
Expansion Depends on Regulatory Approval
Grab said it is working with Singapore’s Ministry of Transport and Land Transport Authority to expand autonomous vehicle coverage within Punggol. The company is also investing in dedicated AV infrastructure and working with government agencies on a depot in the area. Grab and LTA will assess commuter response and operational performance before deciding on further changes to the service structure.
Grab Eyes Thousands of AVs Across Southeast Asia
Grab President and Chief Operating Officer Alex Hungate said autonomous vehicles would be introduced in a way that complements the company’s existing driver network while creating new career opportunities. Grab said it is developing local capabilities in areas including engineering, design, and operations. The company also plans to eventually deploy thousands of autonomous vehicles across Southeast Asia by 2030.
For Singaporeans, Grab’s planned fleet expansion marks a larger test of how autonomous vehicles could be integrated into everyday transport while remaining subject to government approval and operational assessment. For Indonesians, the development is also relevant because Grab has stated that it ultimately plans to deploy thousands of autonomous vehicles across Southeast Asia, making Singapore an important early market for the company’s regional ambitions.
