Suahasil Nazara replaces Purbaya as global pressures and fiscal concerns weigh on markets.

Indonesia’s surprise change of finance minister has put fiscal policy back under market scrutiny, with investors weighing leadership continuity against global pressure on stocks, the rupiah, and oil prices.

Suahasil Replaces Purbaya as Finance Minister
President Prabowo Subianto appointed Suahasil Nazara as finance minister on September 14, 2026, replacing Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa. Suahasil had served as deputy finance minister since 2019. The appointment was formalized through Presidential Decree No. 97/P of 2026 covering the dismissal and appointment of the finance minister for the remainder of the 2024-2029 cabinet term.

Analyst Warns of Fiscal Uncertainty
Economist and currency and commodity analyst Ibrahim Assuaibi said the sudden reshuffle could increase fiscal uncertainty and raise questions among foreign investors about the continuity of government budget policy. Ibrahim also pointed to changes in fiscal assumptions, including a budget deficit estimate moving from 2.68 percent to 2.86 percent and an oil-price assumption from US$70 to US$80, as factors that could add to investor concerns. His comments represent his analysis rather than an official government assessment.

IHSG Initially Rebounds After Appointment
Indonesia’s benchmark Jakarta Composite Index, or IHSG, experienced sharp volatility on September 14. The index fell as much as about 2.6 percent to 6,371.40 before recovering after Suahasil’s appointment, briefly turning positive and eventually closing down just 0.10 percent at 6,534.69. Market analysts cited the appointment as one factor that helped reduce earlier selling pressure, while global conditions were also influencing trading.

Global Pressure Weighs on Stocks Again
The initial improvement did not fully carry into September 15. By the end of that trading day, the IHSG had fallen 1.13 percent to 6,461.15, with energy and financial shares among the main sources of weakness. BRI Danareksa Sekuritas cited higher global oil prices, pressure on emerging-market assets, and expectations surrounding the US Federal Reserve as important external factors affecting Indonesian markets.

Rupiah Remains Under Pressure
The rupiah also remained weak following the reshuffle. It closed at around Rp17,669 per US dollar on September 14 and weakened further during subsequent trading. Suahasil has stated that maintaining the credibility and health of the state budget will be a priority, while market participants continue watching his early fiscal policies and the government’s management of the budget deficit.

The finance minister reshuffle has created a period of adjustment for Indonesia’s financial markets, with domestic fiscal questions developing alongside significant global pressures. For Indonesians, movements in the rupiah, stock market, and fiscal policy can affect broader economic confidence. For Singaporeans and businesses with exposure to Indonesia, the transition is also relevant because financial and investment ties between the two economies remain closely connected.
