Former Singapore Idol judge disputes complainant’s testimony while prosecution defends trial court findings.

Former Singapore Idol judge and music producer Ken Lim has taken his molestation case to Singapore’s High Court, seeking to overturn both his conviction and 13-month prison sentence.

Ken Lim Appeals Conviction and Sentence
Ken Lim Chih Chiang, 62, appealed to Singapore’s High Court on September 11, 2026, challenging his conviction for molesting a 25-year-old woman and the 13-month jail term imposed on him. A district court convicted the former Singapore Idol judge on September 26, 2025, over an incident at the Hype Records office on November 23, 2021, and sentenced him on November 18, 2025. Justice Hoo Sheau Peng reserved judgment and will issue her decision at a later date.

Defense Challenges Complainant’s Account
Lim’s lawyer, Senior Counsel Tan Chee Meng, argued that the conviction was unsafe because of what he described as contradictions in the complainant’s evidence. The defense questioned differences between her testimony and what she later told her then-boyfriend and two close friends, and also challenged whether the physical act described could have occurred in the manner alleged. Lim’s lawyers additionally raised concerns about a segment of CCTV footage they said was unavailable.

Prosecution Says Evidence Was Consistent
Deputy Public Prosecutor James Chew rejected the defense arguments, saying the woman remained consistent on the material elements of the molestation. Prosecutors argued that accounts given by her boyfriend and friends broadly supported her description of what happened and her emotional state afterward. The prosecution also dismissed the defense argument that the alleged physical act was impossible and said the CCTV issue did not undermine the conviction.

13-Month Jail Term Also Challenged
Lim’s legal team separately argued that the sentence was excessive, suggesting that approximately eight months in prison would be more consistent with previous cases. Prosecutors defended the punishment, which comprised a 12-month jail term plus an additional month in lieu of caning, arguing that it was not manifestly excessive. The appeal therefore asks the High Court to consider both whether the conviction should stand and whether the sentence was appropriate.

Case Dates Back to 2021 Work Meetings
The complainant had been talent-spotted by Hype Records and met Lim three times between November 16 and November 23, 2021. The court previously heard that the molestation occurred during the third meeting after discussions related to entering the entertainment industry. Lim was separately acquitted in December 2024 in a different case involving another woman, while five remaining charges involving allegations concerning three other women were withdrawn after his 2025 sentencing in the current case.

The High Court appeal represents the next major stage in a closely watched Singapore criminal case involving a prominent entertainment industry figure. For Singaporeans, the eventual ruling will determine whether Lim’s conviction and sentence remain in force. Indonesians who follow Singapore’s entertainment and legal developments may also watch the decision because of the strong media and cultural connections between the two countries.
