Prabowo urges Russian businesses to use Indonesia as a bridge into Southeast Asia.
Indonesia is positioning itself as a strategic link between Russia and Southeast Asia, with President Prabowo Subianto pushing for deeper trade, investment, energy and transport cooperation.
Prabowo Pitches Indonesia as ASEAN Entry Point
President Prabowo Subianto told Russian businesses on September 3, 2026, that Indonesia could serve as a natural gateway into ASEAN’s market of roughly 680 million people. Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Prabowo said the Pacific should connect rather than divide the two countries and called for stronger trade, investment and transportation links. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who joined the same plenary session, described the Asia-Pacific as a major center of global economic growth and emphasized Russia’s interest in expanding cooperation across the region.
Trade Reached US$4.8 Billion in 2025
Bilateral trade between Indonesia and Russia reached US$4.8 billion in 2025, up 21.7 percent from the previous year, according to Indonesia’s Trade Ministry. Prabowo said the countries have complementary economies, with Russia able to supply wheat, fertilizer, energy, scientific expertise and advanced engineering, while Indonesia can export products including palm oil, fisheries, coffee, rubber, textiles and furniture. He proposed doubling bilateral trade during the first review period of Indonesia’s free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union.
Eurasian Trade Deal Could Lower Barriers
Indonesia signed a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union in December 2025, covering Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Prabowo said the agreement would eliminate or reduce tariffs on 11,882 tariff lines, representing more than 90 percent of the bloc’s total tariff lines, and is expected to enter into force in early 2027. He urged EAEU members to complete their domestic approval procedures quickly so the agreement could take effect.
Shipping, Energy and Investment Take Priority
Prabowo also pushed for direct shipping between Indonesia and Russia’s Far East, additional direct air connections and greater cooperation in energy. He invited Russian cooperation in oil and gas exploration, production and processing, as well as renewable energy, smart grids and civilian nuclear technology, while proposing joint project financing between Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund Danantara and the Russian Direct Investment Fund. Putin separately highlighted potential cooperation in agriculture, shipbuilding, digital technology and nuclear power.
Indonesia Maintains Non-Aligned Foreign Policy
Prabowo stressed that Indonesia does not want to join military alliances but is seeking economic partnerships. He framed the approach within Indonesia’s longstanding “free and active” foreign policy, under which the country seeks to maintain an independent position while engaging with major powers. Prabowo said Indonesia wants to work with countries in every direction as a sovereign and equal partner, while rejecting the idea that closer cooperation would mean joining a new geopolitical bloc.
Indonesia’s offer to become Russia’s gateway to ASEAN reflects Jakarta’s ambition to play a larger role connecting Southeast Asia with major global economies while maintaining its non-aligned diplomatic position. Indonesians could benefit from increased investment, export opportunities and technology cooperation if proposed projects materialize. Singapore and other ASEAN economies may also feel the effects as deeper Russia-Indonesia trade creates new commercial, logistics and investment flows across the regional market.
