Electronics remain Batam’s export backbone as imports outpace shipments through July.

Batam’s trade activity remains strong, but its trade balance is facing growing pressure. Imports have risen sharply while exports remain below last year’s levels.

Imports Continue to Outpace Batam’s Exports
Batam recorded exports of approximately US$11.22 billion from January to July 2026, down 1.60 percent from the same period in 2025. Imports rose 19.16 percent to about US$12.18 billion, leaving imports roughly US$960 million higher than exports during the seven-month period.

First-Half Data Showed Early Pressure
The imbalance was already visible during the first six months of 2026. Batam’s exports reached US$9.47 billion from January to June, down 2.01 percent year on year, while imports climbed 18.99 percent to US$10.41 billion. June exports reached around US$1.61 billion, up 3.45 percent from June 2025, although cumulative exports for the first half remained 2.01 percent lower year on year.

Electronics Remain Export Backbone
Electrical machinery and equipment continued to dominate Batam’s exports, generating about US$4.91 billion in the first half of 2026 and accounting for 54.43 percent of non-oil and gas exports. Mechanical machinery followed at US$1.13 billion, while chemical products, articles of iron and steel, and animal or vegetable fats and oils were also among Batam’s major export categories.

Singapore Remains a Key Market
The United States was Batam’s largest export destination during the first half of 2026, receiving about US$2.58 billion, while Singapore ranked second with US$2.25 billion. Singapore accounted for 23.79 percent of Batam’s total exports during the first half of the year, underscoring its position as one of the city’s largest export markets. China, meanwhile, remained Batam’s largest source of imported goods.

Batu Ampar Drives Trade Flows
Batu Ampar remained Batam’s most important international cargo gateway, handling approximately US$6.51 billion in exports and US$6.28 billion in imports during the first half of 2026. BPS said the rise in imports reflected strong industrial demand for raw materials, machinery and production equipment as manufacturing activity continued.

Batam’s latest trade figures reveal both strength and vulnerability. Its electronics-driven manufacturing sector remains deeply connected to global markets, but import growth far exceeding export growth creates a growing imbalance. For Indonesia, strengthening local supply chains, export diversification, and higher-value manufacturing will be increasingly important. Singapore also has a direct stake in Batam’s performance, given its position as Batam’s second-largest export market and the extensive cross-border supply chains linking the two economies.
